Environmental Sustainability

Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) was established on 7th September, 1970 under the provisions of Maharashtra Water (Prevention and control of Pollution) Act, 1969. The Water (P & CP) Act, 1974 was adopted in Maharashtra on 1st June, 1981 and accordingly Maharashtra Pollution Control Board was formed under the provisions of Section 4 of Water (P & CP) Act, 1974. The MPCB implements various environmental legislations in the State of Maharashtra, including the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 and some of the provisions under Environmental (Protection) Act, 1986 and Rules framed there under, from time to time, such as, Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, Solid Waste Management Rules etc. MPCB implements these environmental legislations via its 12 Regional Offices (ROs) in the State and functions under the administrative control of Environment Department, Government of Maharashtra. As directed by Hon‟ble National Green Tribunal vide order dated 26/09/2019 in O.A. No. 360 of 2018 filed by Shree Nath Sharma Vs Union of India and Others; the Department of Environment in respective States / UTs should collect district plans to prepare State Environment Plan, which shall be monitored by respective Chief Secretaries of State/UT by 15/12/2019.
